  1. Wycliffe, John c. 1320-1384. English
  2. religious reformer. Allying himself with the
  3. party of John of Gaunt, which was opposed to
  4. ecclesiastical influence at court, he
  5. attacked abuses in the church, maintaining
  6. that the Bible rather than the church was the
  7. supreme authority. He criticized such
  8. fundamental doctrines as priestly absolution,
  9. confession, and indulgences, and set
  10. disciples to work on translating the Bible
  11. into English. Having studied at Oxford
  12. University, he became Master of Balliol
  13. College there, and sent out bands of
  14. travelling preachers. He was denounced as a
  15. heretic, but died peacefully at Lutterworth.
